Radio Show 11-15-12

Officially, this is my fifth radio session.  However, the show I did at the beginning of November seems lost -- or at least forever hidden by the station's recording robots -- so I'll call this episode number four.  At any rate, it's a fun one...we travel from the U.K. to North Africa to Brooklyn, then down to Brasil and back to Brooklyn, only to return eastward toward Turkey and Italy.  And that's all before the mid-show voice break.  We also hit up Albuquerque, Philly, Senegal, Mali, Nigeria and Sudan (via Brooklyn, of course).  As always, PSAs are edited out, and the tracklist follows:

1. Short Change Hero - The Heavy
2. Aal Eah - Samira Saeid
3. How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
4. Quer Queira, Quer Nao Queira - Tim Maia
5. It Ain't Nothing Like - Amerigo Gazaway (Feat. Kriminul)
6. Karni Buyuk Koca Dunya - OnDER Bali
7. Grigio Perla - Gian Franco Pienzio
8. West - Wagogo
9. Diarr Diarr - Youssou N'Dour
10. Jeeper Creeper - Sinkane
11. Chérie - Amadou & Mariam
12. Take Time - Orchestre Tumba Africa International

Many Roots Podcast 7 - The Ickey Shuffle

Ever wonder what Ickey Woods was shuffling to in the end zone?  This mix represents my best guess.

For non sports fans and those born after 1990, Ickey Woods was a briefly popular running back for the Cincinnati Bengals in the late 80s and early 90s.  Sort of like a one hit wonder of American football...and he always danced when he scored a touchdown.

Many Roots Podcast 5 - Happy Birthday!

In keeping with this podcast's updated mission, I bring you an episode you can truly learn and dance to.  Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929.  There is universal agreement that Dr. King's dream led to significant improvements in U.S. civil rights.  Nevertheless, the jury remains out on how much things have really improved for persons of color and other marginalized peoples.

I certainly don't know the answer, and I'm not sure a definitive one exists.  This podcast makes space for a variety of voices from the U.S., South Africa and Jamaica to make their arguments, and includes a double dose of Stevie Wonder, whose song "Happy Birthday" was instrumental in the creation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday in the U.S.
